The role of humor in helping professions

I define a range of helping workers (healthcare professional, social workers) in the first part and I add few characteristics those professionals should have to be able to work in this area. The next part is taking into consideration different ways of looking at humor, how humor can be expressed and used in different situations. Obviously, humor is integrated in positive psychology, together with happiness, love and hope. Although the importance of positive psychology can be questioned by some people, positiveness, gaiety and looking at life with a grain of salt (with no limitations) is a big plus in everyday life, but more importantly in challenging times too. At the end of my thesis, I highlight that humor and laughing is crucial to prevent burnout, create a positive working environment for professionals and is a great tool contributing to high quality of life for patients in palliative care.

Phenomenology of Humor in Romantic Relationships

The objective of this thesis is to introduce the topic of humor in the context of romantic relationships from the perspective of both partners separately. It examines the forms, manifestations and functions of humor in the relationship and observes whether the production and perception of humor of the partners changes over time. The theoretical part analyzes the conceptual definition of humor in terms of its functions, aims, styles, focus and the participants in the communication process. Furthermore, the thesis discusses the topic of romantic relationships, presents theoretical models of their formation and stages, describes factors influencing relationship cohesion, and reflects on couple conflicts and the communication strategies that constitute them. The empirical part of the thesis presents qualitative research focusing on the phenomenology of humor in six heterosexual romantic relationships with 12 respondents. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and the subsequent analysis was developed using principles of grounded theory method. Humour during the French classes

Abstract : The thesis aims to provide a comprehensive description of possible use of humour in teaching the French language. In the theoretical section, it defines humour as a form of comic, deals with the influence of humour and laughter on health and describes the advantages and difficulties of integrating humour into school teaching. In the practical part, it analyses the humour in French textbooks, proposes a typology of humour in teaching materials and presents finally didactical sheets to teach French at all language levels. These exercises and activities are dedicated to all speech and language skills. They are focused on different themes to captivate the target age category and meet the requirements to be fun for students. The thesis should become aid and inspiration for those teachers, who decide to incorporate humour and laughter in the teaching of French.

Humor as an important psychological phenomenon

The bachelor thesis deals with humour in the concept of psychology. In a review study, it tries to map globally the phenomenon of humour within psychological discipline. First, it tries to define humour in connection with related concepts and then with the support of individual theories of humor. Furthermore, it focuses on various psychological aspects of humour, in terms of the specifics of the humour process and the development of humour from childhood. It also deals with humour research, methods of measurement and possible areas of empirical focus. Specifically, it tries to clarify personality differences in perception and valuation of humour, possible influence of humour on health, its social aspects, but also negative effects and possible application in psychotherapy. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to use mainly foreign literature to provide an empirical framework of information about humour in terms of diverse areas of psychology. The thesis tries to clarify both the possible positive and negative impact of humour on human in his / her everyday life and to present humour as a phenomenon worthy of greater psychological interest.

The influence of the nucleus accumbens on perception of facial expressions

The bachelor thesis deals with the research of the stimulation of nucleus accumbens with laughter and the influence of this stimulation on the perception of facial expressions. The theoretical part is focused on an anatomical and functional description of nucleus accumbens and related researches. The information on laughter, facial expressions as well as electroencephalography (EEG) and event related potentials (ERP) are processed in the theoretical part. The empirical part introduces a research methodology that aims to determine the influence of laughter and associated nucleus accumbens stimulation on the perception and evaluation of neutral and positive facial expressions (obtained from the KDEF database). The experiment was attended by 16 subjects. The funny videos were showed to the subjects and each of them had the task to evaluate the presented facial expression. Neural data were obtained using an electroencephalogram and processed through the Matlab program, specifically in its EEGlab toolbox. Behavioral data were processed in the Statistica program and a paired T-test was used for statistical analysis. The final analysis of neural and behavioral data included 15 subjects. The resulting analysis showed that despite the stimulation with a humorous stimulus there was a different treatment and evaluation of neutral and positive facial expressions at both neural and behavioral level, which was in contradiction with the established hypotheses. The results did not show that the humorous stimulus used to stimulate nucleus accumbens had a statistically significant effect on the evaluation of facial expressions.

Forms of Clowning: Laughter as Intertextuality and Transgression

Submitted thesis follows up clowning as phenomenon that can be approached in different ways and understood from different points of view. The perspective depends on a theoretical base and methodological tools, including a conceptual apparatus. Because the viewpoint of the phenomenon is the core of submitted theses, I have decided to use as a methodological tool discoursive analysis, particularly bakhtinian analysis. Theoretical background is provided by Mikhail Bakhtin's theories and concepts (dialogism, heteroglossia, speech genres) and Julia Kristeva's theory of intertextuality (that was inspired by bakhtinian thinking). One of key terms of this theses is the concept of transgression which relates to supposition that transgression is one of principal features of clowning. The theses submits confrontation of two different approaches to the phenomenon of clowning. First one is provided by structuralist model by Paul Bouissac. Bouissac describes clowning as an abstract system, relatively static and closed code, which is builded of stabilized signs. His conception presents clowning as a phenomenon firmly tied up with the circus structure. The phenomen of madness in Don Quijote de la Mancha and its time

(in English) Initially this Bachelor Degree Thesis studies the conception of the phenomenon of madness through different centuries. It analyses the ancient tradition of the medical aspect of this concept and it also elaborates in detail its symbolism in the so-called culture of folk humor. These dimensions, which evolved mostly in the Renaissance period, are explored due to its influence on meaning of madness in the masterpiece of Miguel de Cervantes The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. Some other relevant pieces of art and literary works, which could have potential influence on the Cervantes' book, are also expounded. Finally, the existent interpretations of don Quixote's madness are summarized. Flannery O'Connor as satirical priest

49 Summary Although her literary career was short, Flannery O'Connor made a great impression with her peculiar characters which are probably the most unsympathetic ones in the world of fiction. These self-indulged, ignorant individuals remain in our minds long after we have finished our reading. This fact perhaps results from the notion that Flannery O'Connor herself did not have sympathy for them either. Despite her deeply religious point of view, her characters are not treated in the light of assumed Christian humanism. On the contrary, at the end they are facing violent deaths, they are robbed of their artificial limbs and every time when it is possible they are in the centre of her scornful satirical and acid humor. This thesis aims to discuss the specific role of the last mentioned phenomenon and that is O'Connor's acid and satirical humor which interwoven with religious concerns plays a specific role in her fiction. The primary aim of the first chapter is the introduction of the tradition of Southern literature and contextualization of Flannery O'Connor unique place within the Southern literary canon.
